Summary

Traditionally, Isocrates' political position has been branded as conservative. As master of a school that educates young men of the Athenian elite throughout almost all the IVth century BC, he has been considered the ideologist of a moderate political project whose real aim was to abolish practical democracy through institucional reforms which target was to exclude people from the political control. In this paper an alternative explanation is raised: Isocrates tried to save democracy by improving political leadership. Therefore his critic stresses on the demagogic deception and his exhortation intends to develop the liberty of discernment of educated men.
