Abstract

The Old Akkadian system of number notations is still badly understood and – as the author shows – has obviously been so already in antiquity. The system in use differs considerably from the older and even from the contemporary Sumerian one, and previous studies did not result in satisfying explanations of the contradictions and incompatibilities. Among the main problems are the summation of individual numbers, which is often incompatible with the overall sum, as well as misreadings in the texts, which the author is able to improve on several occasions. The discussion of the sources at hand leads the author to the correct interpretation of the system as one of “mixed-decimal numbers”, eliminating this way the main problems in the understanding of the Old Akkadian system of number notations.
