Abstract

Studies in the field of computer-mediated communication (CMC) usually describe emoticons as typical elements of chats, online discussion boards, etc. The semiotic status of emoticons, however, is yet to be defined as most works on the topic give rather superficial descriptions of the phenomena, if they are defined at all. The following study aims at advancing two theses: 1. Emoticons are not depictions of mimic expressions. Their form was indeed originally motivated by iconic resemblance, but the usage of emoticons in written language today cannot be described as a compensation strategy for missing mimic signs. Since their first use in CMC emoticons have evolved into abstract, symbolic signs. Their development resembles that of ancient writing systems such as the cuneiforms or the hieroglyphics. 2. Wherever writers do not necessarily feel obliged to observe the norms of the codified standard language, emoticons have extended the punctuation system. Instead of expressing emotions or moods they contribute to the sequencing of text elements and clarify the illocutionary force of written messages. These functional extensions are an effect of their usage in written interactions; nevertheless, the more traditional kinds of use are still possible, too.
