Der historische und der biblische König Saul (Teil II)

The figure of the historical Saul remains concealed behind the predominantly later narratives, which increasingly form doublets. In the first cycle, which deals with Saul's rise to kingship and his conflicts with the Philistines, he is left in the shadow first of Samuel and then, more cautiously, of Jonathan. In the second sequence David and Jonathan are centre stage, but the tradition has nothing concrete to say about David's victories over the Philistines, besides the report of the heroic deaths of Saul and his sons. Anticipations and flashbacks serve to introduce various later expansions of the story which deepen the shadows which lie over Saul. An exception is formed by I Sam 31 and the later funerary lament over Saul and Jonathan in II Sam 1,19–27. This cautious investigation of the historical Saul confirms in essentials the conclusions of Siegfried Kreuzer (ZAW 113 [2001], 56–73).

La nature du Saül historique se trouve occultée par une série de récits plus récents, en grande partie constitués de doublets. Dans un premier cycle, qui traite de l'accès de Saül à la royauté et ses combats contre les Philistins, il est placé d'une part à l'ombre de Samuel et – plus prudemment – de Jonathan. Dans le second cycle, David et Jonathan sont les figures centrales; de ce fait, la tradition n'a que peu à dire sur les victoires de David sur les Philistins, sauf le récit de la mort héroïque de Saül et de ses fils. Le travail éditorial consiste en une utilisation d'un système pré- et post-référentiel pour aboutir à la présentation finale, qui obscurcit encore la figure de Saül. Une exception est constituée par I Sam 31 et II Sam 1,19–27, l'élégie tardive sur Saül et Jonathan. Cette quête prudente du Saül historique confirme pour l'essentiel les résultats de l'étude de Siegfried Kreuzer (ZAW 113 [2001], 56–73).

Die Gestalt des historischen Saul bleibt hinter den durchgehend jüngeren, zunehmend Dubletten bildenden Erzählungen verborgen. In ihrem ersten, den Aufstieg Sauls zum Königtum und seine Kämpfe mit den Philistern behandelnden Zyklus wird er einerseits in den Schatten Samuels und behutsamer in den Jonathans gerückt. In ihrem zweiten stehen David und Jonathan im Mittelpunkt, wobei die Überlieferung außer dem Bericht über Sauls und seiner Söhne Heldentod nichts Konkretes über Davids Philistersiege zu sagen weiß. Vorverweise und Rückbezüge dienen der Einarbeitung der jeweils jüngeren Ausgestaltungen, welche die auf Saul liegenden Schatten vertiefen. Eine Ausnahme bilden I Sam 31 und die späte Totenklage über Saul und Jonathan II Sam 1,19–27. Die vorsichtige Rückfrage nach dem historischen Saul bestätigt im Wesentlichen das Ergebnis von Siegfried Kreuzer (ZAW 113 [2001], 56–73).
