Epiphanius of Salamis Between Church and State: New Perspectives on the Iconoclastic Fragments

ABSTRACT
Die ikonoklastischen Schriften des Epiphanius von Salamis waren seit ihrer ersten modernen Veröffentlichung im Jahr 1916 ein historisches Rätsel. Im Kontext der Staatsund Kirchenpolitik des vierten Jahrhunderts aber erscheint Epiphanius’ ikonoklastische Rhetorik als plausible subversive Strategie im Machtkampf zwischen Staat und Kirche, der sich vor allem auf das kaiserliche Repräsentationssystem richtet. Theodosius antiheidnische Gesetzgebung dient Epiphanius dabei als Vorwand, um die Vergöttlichung der kaiserlichen Macht selbst zu kritisieren.
