Zusammenfassung

Dieser Beitrag versucht, Spiritual Care in Palliative Care spezifisch zu konkretisieren für die Hinwendung zu Gott in der Krankheitsnot, primär der Patientinnen und Patienten. Dazu greift er für den ersten Teil das Eingangslied der Deutschen Messe (Neumann & Schubert 1827/2013) „Wohin soll ich mich wenden“ auf, das die ganze versammelte Gemeinde einlädt, sich in jeder Lebenslage an Gott zu wenden. Die 6. Kirchenmitgliedschaftsuntersuchung (EKD 2023) berichtet indes Daten zum Säkularisierungsschub in Deutschland, der C. Saunders dringende Empfehlung verstärkt: „You have to know where you go when you are desperate“ (zit. nach Knipping 2006/2007: 26), angesichts oder im Erleben von total pain. Im zweiten Teil kommen – ohne Anspruch eines systematischen Reviews – empirische Studienergebnisse zur Sprache darüber, wie (stark) sich Menschen in Krankheit an Gott wenden, wie Gebet, spirituelle Bedürfnisse und Krankheitsinterpretation miteinander verbunden sind und welche Hilfe Menschen darin erfahren. Überlegungen zum Gebet in Krankheit und der Rolle von Seelsorge und Spiritual Care in Sachen Gebet beschließen den Beitrag.

Abstract

This article attempts to concretize spiritual care in palliative care, specifically for turning to God in times of illness, primarily for patients. For the first part, it takes up the opening hymn of the German Mass (Neumann & Schubert 1827/2013) “Wohin soll ich mich wenden“ („Where do I go“), which invites the whole assembled congregation to turn to God in every situation in life. The 6th Church Membership Survey (EKD 2023), meanwhile, reports data on the surge of secularization in Germany, which reinforces C. Saunders' urgent recommendation: “You have to know where you go when you are desperate“ (cf. Knipping 2006/2007: 26), in the face of or experiencing total pain. In the second part, empirical study results are discussed – without claiming to be a systematic review – on how (strongly) people turn to God in illness, how prayer, spiritual needs and the interpretation of illness are connected and what kind of help people experience in this. Reflections on prayer in illness and the role of pastoral and spiritual care in matters of prayer conclude the article.
