Paint Palette Used by Iranian Masters based on Persian Medieval Recipes

Abstract

Classical Iranian literary sources contain valuable information with respect to materials and techniques related to the art of book-making, including pigments and dyes. Some of these writings have been composed in the form of mystical poetry which needs professional research into the language and classical terms used. Studying these primary sources is not only important for art historians but also for conservators and scientists to understand the material technology of the medieval Persian paint palette. These primary sources of knowledge in many occasions have led us to explore and reveal the secrets behind certain materials and techniques that were used during the medieval period and the reasons behind their usage. The present paper will discuss the Persian paint palette used in Persian manuscripts and miniature paintings from the 13th to 19th centuries. In this study, sixteen manuscripts have been selected and studied in detail; the recipe from each manuscript has been extracted according to each colour used in the Persian paint palette while the materials and techniques are also categorized and compared thoroughly. For easy reference, different materials and techniques used in each colour for preparation of the paint have been described separately with reference to the related treatises and their respective authors.

Die Farbpalette der iranischen Buchmalerei in mittelalterlichen persischen Quellen

Die mittelalterlichen iranischen Quellen enthalten viele wertvolle Informationen über Pigmente und Farbstoffe, die in der Buchmalerei eingesetzt wurden. Einige dieser Texte sind in Form von mystischen Gedichten verfasst, die eine professionelle Interpretation der Sprache und der verwendeten Begriffe erfordern. Diese Quellen sind nicht nur für Kunstgeschichtler von Bedeutung, sondern auch für Restauratoren und Wissenschaftler, denn sie erlauben ein tieferes Verständnis der Materialtechnik mittelalterlicher Buchmalerei in Persien. Sie gestatten nicht nur, die Geheimnisse der Materialien und Anwendungstechniken in dieser Periode zu entschlüsseln, sondern geben auch Aufschluss über ihre Beständigkeit oder Unbeständigkeit. In diesem Beitrag werden die Farbmittel vorgestellt, die in der persischen Buch- und Miniaturmalerei zwischen dem 13. und 19. Jh. eingesetzt wurden. Die in den insgesamt 16 Quellenschriften enthaltenen Rezepturen sind hier wiedergegeben und die darin angeführten Materialien und Techniken klassifiziert und einander gegenübergestellt.

Palette de peinture utilisée par les maîtres iraniens fondée sur les recettes médiévales persanes

Les sources littéraires classiques iraniennes contiennent de précieuses informations concernant les matériaux et techniques utilises dans l’art de confectionner les livres y compris sur les pigments et les colorants. Certains de ces écrits ont été composés sous forme de poèmes mystiques, ce qui exige une recherche professionnelle sur le langage et les termes classiques. L’étude de ces sources fondamentales présente un intérêt primordial non seulement pour les historiens de l’art mais également pour les conservateurs et les scientifiques afin de comprendre la technologie matérielle de la palette de peinture de l’époque médiévale de Perse. Ces sources fondamentales de connaissance nous ont conduits en maintes occasions à explorer et nous ont révélé les secrets qui se cachaient derrière certains matériaux et certaines techniques utilisés pendant la période médiévale ainsi que la raison sur laquelle s’appuyait leur comportement a ce moment précis. Le présent article discutera de la palette de peinture persane utilisée dans les manuscrits et les tableaux persans au cours du 13ème jusqu’au 19ème siècles. Pour cette étude seize manuscrits ont été sélectionnés et analyses en détails ; on a extrait de chaque manuscrit les recettes correspondant à chaque couleur utilisée dans la palette persane ; les matériaux et techniques ont été aussi minutieusement classés par catégories et comparés dans le détail.
