Janice Mae Schopfer has been Head of Paper Conservation at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) since 2007. From 1982 to 2007, she was a paper conservator for the Achenbach Prints and Drawings Collection at Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, at The Legion of Honor. There, she served as the conservator in charge of the Western Regional Paper Conservation Laboratory (WRPCL). Between 1989 and 1990, she was the senior paper conservator at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.
Abstract
This paper reviews the development of the application of high intensity discharge (HID) lamps for light bleaching works of art on paper. It describes the construction of a light bleaching unit using HID lamps, specifying key functionalities of the system. In addition, selected methods of bleaching are discussed for their principal working parameters, namely immersion bleaching, bleaching on the slant washing board, and on a moist blotter. An appendix lists terms important to know when working with HID light bleaching systems.

Lichtbleichen mit Hochdruck-Gasentladungslampen
Dieser Beitrag beschreibt die Anwendungsmöglichkeit von Hochdruck-Gasent-ladungslampen (HIDLampen) in der Papierrestaurierung. Es werden die technischen Voraussetzungen und die Besonderheiten für den Aufbau von Licht-bleichanlagen unter Einsatz dieser Lichtquellen in verschiedenen Papierrestaurierungswerkstätten der Vereinigten Staaten vorgestellt. Ausgewählte Techniken für den Einsatz von HID-Lampen, darunter Lichtbleichen im Bad, auf einem befeuchteten Löschkarton bzw. auf einem so genannten slant washing board werden vorgestellt und die erforderlichen Arbeitsparameter dargelegt. In einem Appendix sind die Fachbegriffe zur Beschreibung dieser Arbeitstechnik angeführt.

Blanchiment au moyen de lampes à décharge luminescente haute pression (HID)
Cet article décrit la possibilité d’utilisation de lampes à décharge de haute intensité (lampes HID) dans la conservation et restauration du papier. On présente les conditions techniques et on discute des spécificités relatives à l’utilisation des installations de systèmes luminescents de blanchiment dans différents ateliers de restauration du papier grâce à cette méthode aux Etats-Unis. Des techniques utilisant des lampes HID sélectionnées pour l’expérience sont présentées, parmi lesquelles on trouve le blanchiment luminescent dans un bain, sur un carton-buvard humidifié ou sur ce qu’on appelle un « slant washing board »; sont présentés également les principaux paramètres de travail. Une liste des termes techniques importants à connaître lorsque l’on travaille avec ces systèmes de blanchiment luminescent (HID) sera jointe en annexe.
