Radiochimica Acta (RCA) is celebrating its 60th anniversary this summer and we, the Editors of the journal and the Publisher, DeGruyter, have the pleasure and honour to present this special issue prepared to mark this auspicious occasion. As an introduction, a brief history of development of the journal, especially over the last 10 years, is given and the present status of the publishing landscape is discussed. RCA is now a hybrid open access journal, managed completely electronically, and appears on-line as well as in the printed form monthly.

Bearing in mind the broad-based nature of Radiochimica Acta, review articles were solicited from well-established scientists working in various branches of radiochemistry. The response was overwhelming; a large number of contributions were received which were peer-reviewed in the usual way. This special issue contains 24 comprehensive and authoritative reports in five areas of radiochemistry, namely, chemistry of radioelements (including actinides and transactinides), energy-related radiochemistry, nuclear data for applications, radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals, and environmental radioactivity. An article deals specifically with the environmental effect of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011.

The contributions in this issue originate from 15 different countries and describe not only the thriving radiochemical work going on in advanced countries but also some fast emerging areas of research in several developing countries. The journal is thus attempting to cover, in an integrative way, all global endeavours related to the advancement of radiochemistry. We hope that the reader will find all contributions informative and interesting.

The preparation and completion of this special issue became possible only through the kind cooperation of authors, the strong support of the referees, the untiring efforts of the Editors and the zeal and enthusiasm shown by the Publisher. All deserve thanks and appreciation.
