Some insights into the lives of builders of early Saint Petersburg

Abstract
In 2014, the unexpected discovery of some mass graves shed light on the earliest days of the newly founded city of Saint Petersburg. The graves could be dated to the beginning of the 18th century, and analyses of the 255 excavated skeletons indicate that the individuals buried there were some of the workers who were forced to the construction sites and contributed tobuilding early Saint Petersburg.
In this article, we aim to examine the possible origins of the workers and their general living conditions, including pathologies, diet and nutrition. For this, we will use various methods from archaeology, anthropology and isotopic analyses, and we will give some insights into the lives of those people.
Résumé
La découverte inattendue en 2014 de plusieurs fosses communes a jeté de la lumière sur les premiers jours de la ville de Saint-Pétersbourg. On a pu dater ces fosses du début du 18e siècle et les analyses de 255 squelettes mis au jour indiquent que les individus enterrés ici faisaient partie des travailleurs enrôlés de force pour les chantiers de la ville naissante de Saint-Pétersbourg.
Nous examinons dans cet article les origines possibles des travailleurs et leurs conditions générales de travail, avec les pathologies, régime alimentaire et nourriture. Des méthodes archéologiques et anthropologiques, ainsi que des analyses isotopiques sont utilisées à cet effet, permettant d’acquérir quelques connaissances sur la vie de ces gens.
Zusammenfassung
Im Jahre 2014 zufällig in Sankt Petersburg entdeckte Massengräber können an den Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts datiert werden und geben Einblicke in die früheste Zeit der neu gegründeten Stadt. Analysen der 255 ausgegrabenen Skelette zeigen, dass es sich bei den Bestatteten um einige der Arbeiter handelt, die auf die Baustellen gezwungen wurden, und so zum Bau der neu gegründeten Stadt beigetragen haben.
In diesem Artikel möchten wir mögliche Herkunftsregionen der Arbeiter sowie deren generelle Lebensbedingungen inklusive Nachweisen von Verletzungen und Ernährung untersuchen. Hierfür werden wir unterschiedliche Methoden aus der Archäologie, der physischen Anthropologie und der Isotopenanalyse verwenden, und damit Einblicke in das Leben dieser Menschen geben.
