Zur Frage der Lokalisierung des sasanidischen Vizekönigtums Gēlān im 3. Jhd. n. Chr.

Zusammenfassung

In der Inschrift Šāpūrs I. in Naqš-i Rustam (ŠKZ) wird ein Gēlān-šāh (König von Gēlān/der Gelen) namens Bahrām genannt, mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit ein Sohn Šāpūrs I. Dem Zeugnis der Quellen folgend, die von der vorsasanidischen bis in die nachsasanidische Zeit den südwestlichen Rand des Kaspischen Meeres als Siedlungsraum der Gelen bezeugen, wie auch die Existenz einer Provinz Gēlān eben dort in spätsasanidischer Zeit, wurde das Vizekönigtum Gēlān von der Forschung seit jeher am Kaspischen Meeres verortet. In jüngerer Zeit plädiert jedoch Rika Gyselen für eine Verortung im Osten des Sasanidenreiches, zum Teil verbunden mit Spekulationen bezüglich einer förderlichen Wirkung der vermeintlichen Herrschaft Bahrāms über Gelen im Osten bei seiner Herrschaftsübernahme im Jahr 273. Die für das 6. und 7. Jahrhundert durch Quellen bezeugte Provinz Gēlān siedelt Gyselen dagegen am Kaspischen Meer an. Auf der Basis der Auswertung relevanter Quellen zu Gelen und Gēlān von der vorsasanidischen bis in nachsasanidische Zeit sowie einer ausführlichen Analyse der von Gyselen in verschiedenen Publikationen sukzessive zugunsten ihrer Hypothese vorgebrachten Argumente wird gezeigt, daß ihre Verortung des Vizekönigtums Bahrāms im Osten des Sasanidenreiches und damit jegliche daran anschließende Spekulationen der Grundlage entbehren. Abschließend wird die Frage der Identität der Gelen angesprochen, die in den 280er Jahren den Aufstand des Hormizd/Ormies gegen Bahrām II. unterstützten. Es wird die Ansicht vertreten, daß es sich höchstwahrscheinlich um Söldner aus Gēlān am Kaspischen Meer gehandelt hat.

Summary

In Šāpūr I’s inscription at Naqš-i Rustam (ŠKZ) a certain Bahrām Gēlān-šāh (King of Gēlān/the Gels) ist mentioned, most likely a son of Šāpūr I. In accordance with the sources which testify the settlement of Gels on the southwestern edge of the Caspian Sea from pre-Sasanian up to post-Sasanian times, as well as the existence of a province named Gēlān just there in the late-Sasanian period, scientifc research has located the viceroyalty Gēlān on the Caspian Sea. But in recent years Rika Gyselen has been pleading for a localization in the Sasanian east, at times connected with speculations on the beneficial effects of Bahrām’s rule over Gels in the east regarding his succession to the throne in 273. In contrast, the province of Gēlān, attested by sources for the 6th and 7th centuries, is located by Gyselen on the Caspian Sea. Based on an evaluation of the relevant sources on Gels and Gēlān from pre-Sasanian to post-Sasanian times as well as a detailed analysis of the arguments Gyelen has successively put forward in favour of her hypothesis, it is shown that the localization of Bahrāms’s viceroyalty in the Sasanian east as well as any subsequent speculations lack the base. Finally, the problem of the identity of the Gels is addressed, who during the 280s supported the revolt of Hormizd/Ormies against Bahrām II. The view is put forward that they most probably have been mercenaries from Gēlān on the Caspian Sea.
