Rhetorische Kompendien im klassischen Griechenland und spätrepublikanischen Rom: Die Rhetorica ad Alexandrum und die Rhetorica ad Herennium im historischen Vergleich

Zusammenfassung

Kulturvergleichende Überlegungen zu griechischen und römischen Rhetoriklehrbüchern sind bisher vor allem unter philologischen Gesichtspunkten und im Hinblick auf formal-technische Aspekte angestellt worden, wobei das Hauptaugenmerk auf den Parallelen zwischen den betreffenden Büchern lag. Der vorliegende Beitrag widmet sich hingegen stärker deren inhaltlicher Ausgestaltung und legt den Schwerpunkt auf grundlegende Diskrepanzen zwischen ihnen. Diese sind nicht zuletzt instruktiv, um wesentliche Unterschiede in der öffentlichen Kommunikation zwischen klassisch-griechischer Polis und spätrepublikanisch-römischer res publica zu ermitteln, die ihrerseits auf je eigene politische, soziale und kulturelle Bedingungen und damit auf Differenzen in den historischen Kontexten verweisen.

Summary

Comparative cultural analyses of Greek and Roman rhetoric textbooks have so far been undertaken primarily from a philological point of view and with regard to formal and technical aspects, with the focus being on the parallels between the respective books. This article, on the other hand, focuses more on their content and emphasizes fundamental discrepancies. These are not least instructive to identify essential differences in public communication between the classical Greek polis and the late republican Roman res publica, which in turn refer to their specific political, social and cultural conditions and thus to differences in the historical contexts.
