The workings of public opinion in the Late Roman Republic: the case study of corruption

Summary

This article evaluates the workings of public opinion in the Late Roman Republic through the analysis of the issue of corruption. It studies rumours, discussions and the debates in the contiones about cases of electoral, political and judicial corruption, as well as bribes from foreign ambassadors. All these discussions and comments led to a set of opinions and ideas about corruption, galvanised by the elite through different arguments. Furthermore, this article deliberates about the importance that the plebs attributed to the issue of corruption and, thus, about their involvement in political debates.

Resumen

Este artículo analiza los mecanismos de funcionamiento de la opinión pública en la República romana tardía a través del estudio de los casos de corrupción. Se examinan los rumores, discusiones y debates en las contiones sobre casos de corrupción electoral, política y judicial, así como los sobornos provenientes de embajadores extranjeros. Todos estos debates suscitaban opiniones e ideas sobre la corrupción que, en ocasiones, la élite promovía y estimulaba. Asimismo este artículo evalúa la importancia que la plebe atribuía al tema de la corrupción y, en relación con ello, la implicación de los ciudadanos en los debates políticos.
