Abstract

The meaning of the particle ápi in the Ṛgveda is twofold: firstly, it has a local meaning ‘to(wards), in(to)’ and, secondly, it is used as coordinating particle meaning ‘and, also, further’. The former is - with regard to numbers - the more prominent one. Both terms - ápi and the modified noun - show an appositive relationship. Only rarely, ‘local’ ápi is attested without a modified noun; in a considerable number of instances, though, it is used as lexicalising preverb. Ápi as coordinating particle is somewhat less well attested in the Ṛgveda, and as such is regularly not part of the predicate, but functions as autonomously referring adverb. 1
