Abstract
The PIE words for ‘earth’ and ‘winter’ are commonly reconstructed as amphikinetic stems 
and 
(cf. Schindler 1967). In the present paper I try to show that a root-noun analysis 
/
and 
is likewise possible and in the case of the word for ‘earth’ not contradicted by the disyllabic Hittite stem tēkan.
