Opportunities After Babel

Abstract
By reclaiming the symbol of personality from the work of Ernst Troeltsch, the paper develops a theological ethic of work that holds the church and the business world in a tensive conversation that is mediated by the Christians who inhabit both worlds. Such a conversation can help churches be more relevant to the needs of their congregations, businesses more faithfully create and attain long-term goals, and Christians move beyond their split personalities to approximate more closely the unity of personality in God.
Zusammenfassung
Durch Rückgewinnung des Symbols der Personalität aus dem Werk von Ernst Troeltsch wird in diesem Aufsatz eine theologische Arbeitsethik entwickelt, die die Kirche und die Geschäftswelt in einer wechselseitigen Spannung hält. Die theologische Arbeitsethik wird von Christen vermittelt, die in beiden Welten leben. Eine solche Vermittlung im Gespräch könnte der Kirche dabei helfen, in Bezug auf die Bedürfnisse ihrer Gemeinden relevanter zu werden, Unternehmen könnten gewissenhafter langfristige Ziele setzen sowie diese auch erreichen und Christen könnten nicht zuletzt ihre eigenen Persönlichkeitsspaltungen überwinden, um der einen Persönlichkeit in Gott näher zu kommen.
