Practical theology for the privileged: a starting point for pedagogies of conversion

Abstract
Privilege is a dehumanizing social reality which is learned via social interaction and internalized as part of identity, contributing to the dynamic of privilege and oppression as practices of entitlement and domination. While privilege often appears as a taken-for-granted norm that cannot be changed, our identities and practices of privilege can be changed. This article offers a vision of border-crossing identity as a potential model for re-crafting identities of privilege, and advocates religious educational practices of conversion as a possible means for facilitating such a change. Utilizing a narrative-based qualitative study of persons who have sought such a transformation, this study seeks to identify a practical theological understanding of conversion as a starting point for crafting pedagogies for transformation for people with privilege.
Zusammenfassung
Die Grundthese dieses Aufsatzes ist es, dass ein Privileg eine entmenschlichte soziale Wirklichkeit darstellt, die über die soziale Interaktion gelernt und als Teil der Identität verinnerlicht wird. So wird die Dynamik von Privilegien und Unterdrückung als Praktiken von Anspruch und Herrschaft gefördert. Während ein Privileg oft als eine für selbstverständlich gehaltene Norm erscheint, die nicht geändert werden kann, plädiert die Autorin dafür, dass unsere Identitäten und Praktiken in Bezug auf Privilegien geändert werden können. Dieser Artikel bietet damit eine Vision der grenzüberschreitenden Identität als ein mögliches Modell für neu zu bildende Identitäten von Privilegien, und plädiert für religionspädagogische Praktiken der Bekehrung als mögliches Mittel zur Erleichterung einer solchen Veränderung. Mithilfe einer auf narrativen Interviews basierten qualitativen Studie von Personen, die eine solche Transformation gesucht haben, soll ein praktisch-theologisches Verständnis von Bekehrung als Ausgangspunkt für pädagogische Ansätze zur Transformation des Selbstverständnisses privilegierter Menschen identifiziert werden.
