Abstract
My aim is to analyze a corpus of Spanish gitano stories in which the phenomenon of self-representation arises and involves, among other concepts, auto-images and hetero-images, that is, the stereotyped images or imagotypes that a given group has of itself and others. I will examine various processes by means of which the heritage assimilated and transformed is perceived by the gitanos as belonging to their own culture.
Note
: This study draws on various records compiled as part of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Research and Universities’ R&D Excellence Project “Documentation, Digital Archival Processing and Lexicological, Historical, Literary and Musicological Study of the Oral Heritage of Eastern Andalusia” (reference: FFI2017-82344-P), funded by the Spanish National Research Agency (AEI) and the European Regional Development Fund (EDRF). It is also one of the activities funded by the HUM-780 Research Framework (“Hispanic Literature Studies of the University of Jaén”). I would like to thank José Manuel Pedrosa and Zsuzsa Bálint for their constructive observations regarding this paper.
