Abstract

Taking its cue from Homi K. Bhabha’s remark about Tangier as a place endowed with a particular temporality that seems favorable to his project of defining spaces of articulation and intervention for (post)colonial subjects, this article pinpoints the literary precursor texts, which have overtly or covertly informed the theoretician’s invocation of the Moroccan coastal town. The discussion of narrators and narratives, from Roland Barthes (France) and Mohamed Choukri (Morocco) to Severo Sarduy (Cuba), proposes a strategic silencing – arguably deliberate – of some of these in the performative setup of Bhabha’s own writing. The strategy of not explicitly mentioning these sources stands in remarkable contrast to Sarduy’s more carefully annotated text. Sarduy exactly cites the Tangier-specific pre-texts of Juan Goytisolo and William S. Burroughs and provides thus a correction to Bhabha’s loose textual strategy.
