Abstract

While imagological research has traditionally focused on literary texts and the national images they contain, it can be extended to non-literary documents illuminating how cultural images are generated in the first place. Reporting back to his compatriots on what he called the “New School”, Henry Crabb Robinson, a pioneer mediator of German romanticism to England, took a double perspective. In his official journal articles he expressed a somewhat awkward yet steady enthusiasm for his subject matter. His travel diaries and private letters, by contrast, convey a certain skepticism and irony: as a firm empiricist Robinson sometimes failed to find common sense in the thought of his contemporary German writers and philosophers.
