Abstract

Following Pierre Bourdieu’s definition, francophone authors from the former colonies are in principle excluded from the highest symbolic recognition of the French literary field. Presumed to be limited to a search for identity, these authors cannot devote themselves to some disinterested renewals of literary form as long as they wish to preserve their distance from the cultural scene of the metropole. With the return of the story in post-avant-garde narratives it becomes possible to overcome this dilemma. The criminal story, a preferred form of post-avant-garde writing, is particularly suitable to allow for participation in advanced literary currents without surrendering claims to cultural autonomy. An analysis of the various forms of interrogation (Enquête) in Patrick Chamoiseau’s novel Solibo Magnifique illuminates the post-colonial perspectives of post-avant-garde writing.
