Abstract

The long European tradition of visual poetry begins with Hellenism, continues through late Antiquity, the early Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque period, and stretches into the twentieth century. The distinctive feature of twentieth-century visual texts seems to be that they generate meaning not by means of letters and words alone, but also by means of the specific ways these are arranged on the page. But this characterization applies to the archetypes of the tradition, not only to its most recent examples.
