Abstract

The Pharos Lighthouse in Alexandria was completed and consecrated in 297 (Suda’s date) and not, as usually stated, in 282, under Ptolemy II (Eusebius’ date). Ptolemy and Berenike, called θεοὶ Σωτῆρες as early as 305/4, were the gods to whom Sostratos actually dedicated the building. This is confirmed by representations of Berenike as a young and living goddess (Aphrodite and Soteira), by the presence of Pyrrhus in Alexandria in 297 (Suda) and by Strabo who tells us who they were. The 282 date is a mistake caused by identifying the Saviour Gods as the Dioscuri rather than Ptolemy and Berenike.
