Abstract

It has been taken for granted that in Hesiod fr. 75 MW (= PSI II 130 column I) Schoeneus’ speech includes ll. 13-25 and is continued in the missing lines. In this article, I challenge this communis opinio by making two points. First, in light of two Iliadic parallels, I suggest supplementing εἰ μέν κε(ν) at the beginning of l. 18. Second, I argue that ll. 23-25 represent a hitherto unrecognized ‘Beinahe-Episode’, which is spoken in the voice of the primary narrator.
