News from the European Optical Society
The EOS is organizing the next edition of its successful conferences on Manufacturing of Optical Components (EOSMOC 2013) and on the Optofluidics (EOSOF 2013) in Munich, Germany, from 13 to 15 May 2013.
Within EOSMOC 2013 a total of seven invited lecturers will introduce significant technology trends, emerging technologies and associated prospective developments to the audience. Among them are three keynote speakers:
Robbert Bergmans from the VSL Dutch Metrology Institute of The Netherlands, will give an overview and current status of a 3-year project titled ‘Optical and tactile metrology for absolute form characterization’ which started in September 2011, under the European Metrology Research Program, to measure high quality optical surfaces of lenses and mirrors.
Ekkard Brinksmeier from the University of Bremen, Germany, will present the current state of optics manufacturing with the latest results from the research center on the replication of complex optical elements ‘SFB/TR4’.
Ando Makoto from Light Engine Limited, China, will highlight how novel optical techniques help LEDs meet the market requirements on light distribution.
Within EOSOF 2013 ten invited experts from the academic research sectors will present the latest developments in the field of optofluidics, while addressing specific application areas, such as reconfigurable photonics, energy applications of optofluidics, novel display technologies, and biomedical optofluidics. Among them is one keynote speaker:
Andy Yun from Harvard University, USA, will discuss a common problem in photomedicine: the difficulty to deliver light efficiently into tissues in vivo. Two forward looking approaches, based on biological light sources and optical waveguides made of biopolymers will be introduced.
In addition, four industry experts will speak on their technology, the challenges of bringing optofluidic technologies to the market, and future commercial opportunities for optofluidics.
Both conferences will be held under the umbrella of the World of Photonics Congress (WoP) 2013, the leading international congress for optical technologies in Europe and in conjunction with LASER: World of Photonics, the international trade fair for optical technologies including components, systems and applications.
Registration at an ‘early-bird’ fee is possible until the 22 April and entitles participants to free entrance to both conferences as well as to the whole WoP 2013 and the exhibition.

EOS Prize and Fellowship – call for nominations 2013
As happens every year, all EOS members are invited to nominate their preferred candidate for the honorary EOS Fellowship and to propose a publication to be considered for the EOS Prize.
All nominations and proposals must be received by the 15 May 2013.
Consisting of a cash prize and a diploma, the EOS Prize 2013 will be announced at the Annual General Assembly in Munich.
The conditions for eligibility are:
The work was performed in Europe.
The work is published under the auspices of the EOS (for example at JEOS: RP or at an EOS Topical Meeting).
The work has not been awarded before by another prize committee.
The paper must be published in the past or present year of the nomination.

The EOS Fellowship is the highest category of membership and is conferred to the EOS members who have made a special contribution to the EOS, have served the optics and photonics community and/or have made significant research contributions to optics and photonics.
Any EOS member is entitled to nominate up to three candidates. The nomination must include a short biography/CV of the candidate and two letters of support of which at least one must come from another EOS member.
