Le peuplement estival de cétacés dans le Sanctuaire Marin Pelagos (Méditerranée nord-occidentale): distribution et abondance / Summer cetacean popoulation in the Pelagos Marine Sanctuary (northwest Mediterranean): distribution and abundance

Résumé

Une campagne à la mer de 10 jours a été menée durant l'été 2001 pour déterminer la population de cétacés dans le Sanctuaire Marin Pelagos de Méditerranée occidentale, grâce à la méthode du transect linéaire combinée à un échantillonnage acoustique. Un total de 1613 km d'effort effectif de prospection a permis d'obtenir 93 observations de cétacés de huit espèces différentes: le Dauphin bleu et blanc (55 observations), le Rorqual commun (25 observations), le Cachalot, le Dauphin de Risso, le Dauphin commun, le Ziphius de Cuvier, le Globicéphale noir et le Grand dauphin. Ces espèces ont été observées en fonction de leur habitat préferentiel dans quatre régions du Sanctuaire: les secteurs nord-est, central, sud-ouest et tyrrhénien. C'est dans le secteur central que les abondances maximales de Dauphin bleu et blanc et de Rorqual commun ont été rencontrées, mais une diversité plus forte a été trouvée dans le secteur tyrrhénien. L'estimation de densité pour ces deux espèces s'établit à 0,52 individus/km2 pour Stenella coeruleoalba ) et 0,097 individus/km2 pour Balaenoptera physalus soit des effectifs de 37.526 (CV=26,2%) et 715 individus (CV=31,2%). Ces estimations concordent assez bien avec des travaux réalisées en 1991, 1992 et 1996 pour les régions ligure et provençale du Sanctuaire Marin Pelagos. L'utilisation d'une telle méthode permettrait un suivi régulier avec la possibilité de détecter des variations de population de l'ordre de 7%.

Abstract

A 10-day line transect survey was carried out during summer 2001 to determine the distribution and abundance of cetaceans in the International Marine Sanctuary. From a total effort of 1613 km, 93 sightings were obtained for eight species: striped dolphin (55 sightings), fin whale (25 sightings), sperm whale, Risso's dolphin, short-beaked common dolphin, Cuvier's beaked whale, long-finned pilot whale and bottlenose dolphin. Cetaceans were observed, depending on their usual distribution pattern, in four regions of the sanctuary: the Northeast, Central, Southwest and Tyrrhrenian sectors. Density estimates were 0.52 individuals/km2 ( Stenella coeruleoalba ) and 0.097 individuals/km2 ( Balaenoptera physalus ), with respective abundances of 37,526 (CV=26.2%) and 715 individuals (CV=31.2%). Striped dolphins and fin whales were more abundant in the central region, when the diversity was higher in the Tyrrhenian region, with sighting rates of 0.5 individuals/100 km for the sperm whale and Cuvier's beaked whale, 4.8 and 7.3 individuals/100 km for Risso's dolphin and the common dolphin, respectively. Abundance estimates are in agreement with those previously obtained in 1991, 1992, and 1996, considering the differences in geographical limits. Statistical testing showed that such surveys might detect abundance changes of 7–10% if carried out regularly.
