Drive counts for grey brocket deer Mazama gouazoupira in the Bolivian Chaco / Estimation de la population du cerf brun Mazama gouazoupira dans le Chaco de Bolivie par la méthode du dénombrement total

Abstract

In the context of a community wildlife management program with the Isoseño communities of the Bolivian Chaco, we tested drive sample counts as a method for estimating densities of grey brocket deer ( Mazama gouazoupira ). Drive count density estimates of 12–14/km2 are consistent with radiotelemetry data and are several-fold higher than estimates from line transect surveys of 1.7–2.4/km2. However, drive counts are not suitable for other Chacoan game species, with the possible exception of collared peccary ( Pecari tajacu ). In addition to providing density estimates, drive counts facilitate and encourage the wide participation of community members in research and monitoring activities, and are also valuable in demonstrating basic wildlife management concepts.

Résumé

Dans le cadre d'un programme de gestion de faune avec les communautés Isoseños du Chaco de Bolivie, nous avons testé la méthode du dénombrement total pour estimer la densité de cerfs bruns ( Mazama gouazoupira ). Les estimations selon la méthode de dénombrement total de 12–14/km2 correspondent aux résultats de la radio télémetrie, mais sont plusieurs fois plus élevées que les estimations de dénombrement par transects de 1–2/km2. Néanmoins, les dénombrements totaux ne sont pas appropriés pour recenser d'autres espèces de faune du Chaco, à la possible exception du pécari à collier ( Pecari tajacu ). En plus de produire des estimations de densité, la méthode de dénombrement total facilite et encourage la participation des communautés dans les activités d'études scientifiques et de surveillance, et est aussi importante pour démontrer des concepts élémentaires de gestion de faune.
