The Fabulist Aristophanes

Abstract
This paper examines the fables that are told in Aristophanes' comedies and questions whether there is any evidence that fables are a low-class form of expression. It maintains that fables do not belong to any particular class and that there are other more important shared characteristics among the fable tellers in Wasps, Peace, Birds, Frogs and Lysistrata, most notably their age, cleverness, and likeability as protagonists and comic heroes.
Résumé
En examinant les fables qui se racontent dans les comédies d'Aristophane, cet article pose la question de savoir s'il existe des indices permettant de considérer la fable comme une forme d'expression propre au peuple. Nous concluons d'une part, que les fables ne relèvent pas d'une classe sociale particulière et d'autre part, que ceux qui, dans Les Guêpes, La Paix, Les Oiseaux, Les Grenouilles et Lysistrate, racontent les fables, ont en commun des traits autrement importants, notamment l'âge et l'astuce, avec en plus un degré de sympathie qu'ils sont en mesure d'inspirer en tant que protagonistes et héros comiques.
Zusammenfassung
Dieser Beitrag untersucht die in Aristophanes' Komödien erzählten Fabeln. In Frage gestellt wird die Annahme, daß Fabeln eine unterschichtliche Ausdrucksform bilden. Vielmehr wird der Standpunkt vertreten, daß Fabeln keiner bestimmten Klasse zuzurechnen sind und daß sich bei ihren Erzählern andere, wichtigere Gemeinsamkeiten finden, insbesondere bei den Fabelerzählern in den Wespen, im Frieden, in den Vögeln, den Fröschen und in Lysistrata. Dazu zählen vor allem Alter, Intelligenz und sympathische Erscheinung als Akteure sowie als Helden der Komödien.
