Through the Looking Glass. A Consideration of Luigi Capuana's Fiabe

Abstract
The esteemed scholar, author and educator Luigi Capuana, like his contemporary and fellow Sicilian Giuseppe Pitrè, profited from his familiarity with Sicilian folklore and tradition to compose fairy tales that evoked the tradition of the oral tales, but he enriched them with a humour, fantasy and realism all his own. This article considers the extent to which Sicilian culture and folklore, the narrative style of Italian Verismo and literary tradition inform Capuana's five collections of fairy tales.
Résumé
Luigi Capuana, le savant, auteur et pédagogue distingué, a profité – tout comme son contemporaire et compatriote sicilien Giuseppe Pitrè – de sa familiarité avec le folklore et la tradition siciliens pour la composition de contes évocant la tradition orale, tout en les enrichissant avec un humour, une imaganition et un réalisme propre à lui. Le présent article considère l'envergure dans laquelle la culture et le folklore siciliens, le style narratif du Verismo italien et la tradition littéraire en général ont influencé les cinq collections de contes de Capuana.
Zusammenfassung
Der angesehene Gelehrte, Schriftsteller und Pädagoge Luigi Capuana hat wie sein Zeitgenosse und sizilianischer Landsmann Giuseppe Pitrè seine Vertrautheit mit der sizilianischen Volksüberlieferung beim Verfassen von Märchen genutzt, die die Tradition des mündlichen Erzählens beschwören, und hat sie gleichzeitig mit einem Humor, einer Phantasie und einem Realismus bereichert, die ganz sein eigen sind. Der vorliegende Aufsatz untersucht das Ausmaß, in dem sizilianische Kultur und Volksüberlieferung, der Erzählstil des italienischen Verismo und die literarische Tradition allgemein die fünf Märchensammlungen Capuanas beeinflußt haben.
