Abstract

The use of electrical stimulation to cure diseases is known for more than 2000 years. In ancient times, the Romans used electrical fish to alleviate pain caused by gout and rheumatism. Up to date, it was a long way to come to a scientific understanding of the bioelectrical phenomena in the body, the physiological mechanisms behind our senses and movements and the pathophysiological alterations after lesions of the spinal cord or hearing and vision loss. However, it is still a challenge to transfer this still incomplete knowledge into technical aids to restore lost sensory or motor functions, at least to a certain extent.
