Online terminography for Indigenous Australians

  • Pam Peters

Abstract

This paper presents an initiative in applying user-based lexicography principles to online terminography. It discusses ways of designing an online termbank of terms in Australian Family Law to make content accessible to Indigenous users with low literacy. It requires rethinking of all the verbal demands in the semasiological design of dictionaries and termbanks. Instead it uses an onomasiological design, foregrounding the conceptual structure of the resource for users. The termbank’s structure is vested in a set of keywords as in a thesaurus, coupled with iconic images as in the “easy-read” approach. It provides audio support in voiceovers for each keyword as the cursor runs over them, and for all subsidiary terms. Recordings of definitions of each word/term are linked to each termpage, to assist those with low reading skills. Thus the online termbank makes use of multiple media (graphic, audio, verbal), to facilitate users’ access to unfamiliar words and concepts in family law.
