Zur Berechtigung historischer Lexikographie: Fakten und Überlegungen

Abstract
The current paper distinguishes between lexicography directed at individual words and lexicography directed at the complete vocabulary of a language. The first approach relies on a representation-theoretical based theory of the lexicon and sees its assignment in the description of the highest possible number of headwords that are treated isolationistic. However, their presentation still displays a definite width. The second approach rather has a pragmatic-communicative base. It has the interconnectedness of all headwords regarding semantic, syntactic and word formation aspects as goal. In the lexicography of German and its neighbouring languages, this approach is predominantly found in the FWB. A justification question is directed at both these approaches in lexicography.
