This chapter is in the book Artificial Intelligence in Cancer

Abstract

Melanoma is the skin cancer with the most unfavourable prognosis. If detected in its early stages, it can be effectively managed with surgical interventions. However, once metastasis occurs, the chances of survival decrease considerably. Artificial intelligence (AI) is extensively utilised in the field of healthcare, namely in dermatology. AI encompasses statistical models and algorithms that have the ability to continuously learn from data in order to anticipate the attributes of future samples and accomplish a specific objective. It plays a crucial role in the identification of skin cancer. Due to its widespread dissemination, utilisation, and the development of new technologies, AI is more accessible even to the general public. AI can be utilised for the early identification of skin cancer. Timely identification is crucial for the efficient management and improved results of skin cancer. Recently, there has been a significant surge in the development of computer-aided diagnostics systems for the detection of skin cancer, utilising AI technology. This chapter focusses on the progress made in using digital image-based AI technologies for diagnosing skin cancer.
