Abstract

Footwear products are fashion items with high requirements linked with functionality and ergonomics. Their production includes assembling of various components that have different shapes and manufacturing methods. In the traditional way of manufacturing footwearfootwear products, these components are cut from flat materials with spatially shaped elements. Recently, the developments of technologies have a widespread use in footwear production. In this work, a general introduction on the use of CAD/CAM technologies in the footwear industry will be presented. New ways of product development that are used effectively in various stages of footwear design and manufacturing, including 3D design, digital prototyping, pattern development, and automated cutting will be included. The advantages of the use of 3D modeling and simulation tools for designers are a boost to create complex shoeshoe structures, optimize material use, reduce production time, and achieve the right fit and comfort. All these technologies are shaping the ways in which various footwear products are created and offered to consumers.
