Sustainability in Healthcare
This chapter is in the book Sustainability in Healthcare

Abstract

Sustainability has become an essential component of healthcare supply chain management, requiring the development of accurate measurement frameworks. The concept of ecological and social sustainability is increasingly recognized as a significant factor that poses a potential risk to overall sustainability, as human actions play a large role in its development. The chapter provides a critical analysis of the many components of sustainability within healthcare supply chains, including environmental, social, and economic aspects. Furthermore, the study delves into the significance of technology, data analytics, and industry standards in improving the measurement of sustainability. The chapter offers a thorough examination of the assessment of sustainability within healthcare supply chain management, including a complete analysis of its importance and continuous development. Social sustainability focuses on the aspects of sustainability that pertain to the well-being and development of human beings. The chapter discusses a growing practice of incorporating social practices into supply chain management. The significance of social sustainability has increased as a compelling concern, prompting supply chain managers to evaluate the societal effects of their operations on communities. It is essential in healthcare supply chains like health care because human beings are involved at every level. The chapter presents a variety of sustainability indicators that aim to assess the sustainability of supply chains and assist stakeholders in making strategic decisions. The primary objective of the study is to construct a model for measuring the performance of a healthcare supply chain sustainably. It will take into account both intangible attributes and sustainability factors, to ensure the happiness of customers and stakeholders. This chapter aims to examine social sustainability within the hospital and healthcare industry, specifically from the viewpoint of stakeholders. The sustainability index is represented as a multidimensional vector and is organized hierarchically, with different dimensions of sustainability being further broken down into sets of sub-indicators and metrics. While the current study is conceptual and lacks empirical evidence, its objective is to propose the use of this index as a means to enhance the evaluation and health coverage of public health supply chains. The promotion of sustainable practices within the healthcare sector involves a dynamic and engaged collaboration between hospitals and their many stakeholders. The study focuses on the healthcare supply chain, specifically the coordination of numerous healthcare providers to offer therapy to patients.
