15 Nominal inflection in the languages of Northern Asia
-
Stefan Georg
Abstract
This chapter illustrates the major morphological categories of the (substantive) noun in the families of Northern Asia (Turkic, Mongolic, Tungusic - or “core Altaic” for observers who view these as genealogically related); Uralic, represented by its Asian branches Ob’-Ugric and Samoyed; the “Palaeoasiatic” groups Yeniseian, Yukaghir, Nivkh/ Amuric, Chukchi-Kamchatkan, and Eskaleut, represented by Siberian Yupik and Aleut; as well as Japanese/Ryukyuan, Korean, and Ainu from the North of East Asia. The discussion focuses on the categories of case, number, and possession, and highlights typological constants of this area (many of which are also typical for some adjacent macro-regions of Eurasia), as well as areally more unusual phenomena, as for example the system of noun-classes in Ket, reflexive possession in Mongolic, focus marking in Yukaghir, prefixal possessive marking in Ket and Nivkh, or ergativity in Chukchi-Koryak and Eskimo-Aleut.
