Abstract

The Latin opinion verbs censeo, opinor and sentio share some syntacticsemantic features - human subjects, eventive or abstract Objects, typically AcI complementation (the classical verba sentiendi et cogitandi Direct Object) - and show some syntactic, semantic and pragmatic divergences. The three, as mental predicates, have been said to be non-prototypically transitive (Hopper and Thompson 1990). This paper aims to apply the recent revisions of the “dependency grammar” models - namely the Verbal Alternations proposal of Levin (1993), Dik’s functional standards (1978: 13-15), and the Cognitive Grammar insights in the matter - in order to provide a better explanation for non-canonical realizations of their predicative frame. Three “alternations”, if a lato sensu usage of the term is allowed, will be explored: the “Unexpressed Object alternation”, the “Adjunct-like” fulfilments of the second argument position, and the “Complement of the Object alternation”. The effects of constructions of the kind, subjectification and pragmaticalization, will be briefly addressed as well.
