On the role of IP-related functional categories in the derivation of wh-exclamatives

Abstract
Assuming the cartographic version of the Principles and Parameters Theory of Generative Grammar (Rizzi 1997, 2002, 2005; Cinque 1999, 2005, 2006, 2013; Beninca and Munaro 2011; Laenzlinger 2011; among others), the present paper is aimed at a description of one particular type of wh-exclamatives found in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), viz., the so-called como-exclamatives (‘how-exclamatives’). Based on this description, we seek to discuss the role of the categories from the inflectional domain in the derivation of this sentential type. In order to do so, we propose a systematisation of the properties of this sentential type as listed in the specialised literature, following the methodology of Syntactic Cartography-especially tests featuring elements supposedly belonging to the same category. This methodological expedient is useful in pinpointing the categories involved in the expression of wh-exclamativity and the position of these categories in the hierarchical structure of the clause. By turning to these diagnosing tools, we argue that the projections of ForceP, MirativeP, EvaluativeP, EvidentialP, CircumstatialP (or DemP) would be activated in the derivation of como-exclamatives, so as to make it possible the valuation of, respectively, the following features: force, mirativity, evaluation, evidentiality/ referentiality, and indexicality.
