Chapter 8 Party organization and finance in the MENA region

Become an author with De Gruyter Brill

Abstract

Political parties in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are pivotal in both animating a plural political landscape and, at the same time, in guaranteeing the resilience of authoritarianism. Such a wide variety of performance reflects first and foremost a difference in the institutional framework and in the type of regime they operate. Accordingly, political parties’ organization and finance vary considerably across the region in a way that is functional to guarantee their survival in the context in which they operate and that reflects also the differences between the political families to which each political party is deemed to belong. The chapter surveys the different forms of party organization and finance across the MENA with the aim of investigating the factors behind the different organizational models. In so doing, it sketches a categorization of political parties that, while moving from the classic works of the tradition of political science that is deeply entrenched in the last three centuries of the European history, can also account for the historical peculiarities of the region. The goal of this research is to contribute to the debate about political parties in the MENA with new empirics while also generating new insights for a broader refinement of the literature of political parties so that it is able to account for an understudied region of the world that is often off the radar of comparative studies.
