Abstract
Corrosion is a major issue faced by various industries, resulting in economic losses and safety hazards. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of efficient and sustainable corrosion inhibitors. Carbon allotropes, such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, and carbon dots, have unique structural, electronic, and mechanical properties that make them excellent candidates for corrosion inhibition applications. The chapter begins by providing an overview of the mechanisms of corrosion and the challenges in developing effective corrosion inhibitors. It then discusses the properties and functionalization methods of various carbon allotropes, and their potential for corrosion inhibition. The discussion also covers the various techniques used for the deposition of thin film coatings, such as chemical vapor deposition, electrochemical deposition, and spray coating. Furthermore, the chapter presents recent research studies that have investigated the use of functionalized carbon allotropes as thin film coatings for corrosion inhibition. Finally, the chapter concludes by summarizing the potential of functionalized carbon allotropes-based thin film coatings as sustainable and efficient corrosion inhibitors.
