Chapter 33 The Role of Paratexts in Media Entertainment

Abstract
Media entertainment research often focuses on what are accepted as target objects of interest: central texts such as books, films, shows, video games, among others. However, these media entertainment productions are often accompanied by external pieces of content, called paratexts. Paratexts have long been a part of the media entertainment landscape: movie trailers, video game manuals, and book covers are a few examples. However, not all paratexts are created equal, and although fanzines have been around for decades, recent new media entertainment developments have created online spaces rich for the creation and dissemination of paratexts by consumers. These many types of paratexts can play a role in our experiences with an established central text in several ways. As such, this chapter will explore the textparatext relationship, emphasizing the paratexts, their origin, and how different paratexts may affect our understanding of and experiences with mediated entertainment content.
