19 New Forms and Genres of Humor in Social Media
-
Liisi Laineste
Abstract
This chapter aims to give an overview of a variety of forms and genres of verbal and multimodal humor that have emerged in the context of online interaction in recent years. As social media have become a venue for generating and reproducing humor, scholars raised several research questions that need to be addressed, e.g., the role of social media in globalization of humor, psychological and sociological effects of sharing humor, and the use of online humor in aggressive interaction. Along with these issues, we discuss forms of humor employed by social media users and functions of online humor, such as social bonding or getting public attention, to name but a few. Finally, the chapter outlines interdisciplinary connections in online humor research and suggests future directions in studying humor in social media.
