Abstract

Drone swarms are drones that collaborate to achieve shared objectives, and they are not science fiction. In May 2021, Israel became the first state to use a drone swarm in combat. Numerous states are pursuing the technology, because drone swarms provide significant advantage in generating overwhelming mass, enabling complex behavior, and native combined arms integration. But they are also vulnerable to information countermeasures, and require a strong sustaining industrial base. If drone swarms prove decisive, then their proliferation could be destabilizing. Especially because drone swarms are new weapons of mass destruction. The chapter provides an overview of military drone swarms, including how they work, why states want them, and the challenges they create for global security.
