Abstract

Hydrogen (H2) is one of the most importantly clean and renewable energy sources for future energy sustainability. Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water splitting is considered one of the most efficient ways to convert sustainable energy to the clean energy carrier, H2. In recent years, nanomaterials have attracted much research interest for renewable energy applications due to their diversity and readily tunable electronic, optical, physical, and chemical properties. Nanomaterial-based catalysts have been extensively investigated as next-generation promising ones for HER. In this chapter, the fundamental mechanisms underpinning the electrocatalytic HER are highlighted. The strategies for improving the catalytic activity and long-term durability are introduced. The main challenges and prospects in developing electrodes for water electrolysis are discussed. It is expected that the content covered in this chapter would provide useful guidance for future exploration of novel low-cost nanostructured catalysts for electrochemical HER.
