Abstract

Antike Apokalypsen sind Texte mit einem hohen kulturgeschichtlichen Wert. In ihrer Wirkungsgeschichte transportierten sie Bilder, Motive und Ideen aus ihrem Entstehungskontext in fremde Kulturkreise und färbten die Theologiegeschichte. Texte wie die Apokalypse des Sophonias und das Testament Abrahams können Lücken der Kunst- und Theologiegeschichte schließen, wenn man ihrer Wirkungsgeschichte durchs Mittelalter hindurch folgt. Kunstgeschichtler/ innen stellten regelmäßig motivische Parallelen zwischen mittelalterlichen Darstellungen des Partikulargerichts und dem ägyptischen Totenbuch fest, konnten allerdings keine Erklärung für diese kulturgeschichtlichen Bezüge finden. Dieser Artikel zeigt, dass antike Apokalypsen aus Ägypten einerseits Motive des Totenbuches rezipierten. Andererseits wirkte die dadurch entstehende Bilderwelt in mittelalterlichen Diskursen fort.
