English vowel structure and stress in GP 2.0
-
Markus A. Pöchtrager
Abstract
This contribution looks at the English vowel system (Received Pronunciation) from the point of view of Government Phonology 2.0. It builds on the analysis of tenseness/laxness in Pochtrager (2020) and forms part of the ongoing development of the hypothesis that the old element A be replaced by structure. This substitution has repercussions not only for the representation of vowel quality, but also affects the interaction with prosodic structure, explored in the second half of this article.
