Abstract

Money as an Adversary of Dignity: Perspectives of Philosophy of Culture and Social Philosophy. - This paper examines the systematic relation between money and the idea of human dignity. It argues on the one hand that money plays an important role as a contrastive term in Kant’s concept of dignity. On the other hand it shows that the ideas of human dignity and personhood serve as a contrast in Simmel’s later analysis of money. As a first step, it highlights the 18thcentury discussion on price and value, as presented in Zedler’s encyclopedia, in order to show how economic, legal and moral questions intertwine with regard to that topic (2.1). The paper then focuses on Kant’s theory of price and value in his lecture on Achenwall’s natural law and on his theory of money in the Metaphysics of Morals (2.2), before turning to his idea of dignity (3). The last section suggests a change of perspective by referring to Georg Simmel’s Philosophy of Money, where he describes money as an ‘absolute means’ that becomes an ‘absolute end’ and analyzes the relation between money and personhood (4). The opposition between money and dignity thus brings forth two possible mistakes in dealing with the claim of human dignity: treating persons like commodities and apotheosizing money.
