Abstract

In exploring certain similarities between the Lectures NRF and the Groundwork I argue that Kant arrives at a normative structure that operates in the domains of right and morals. This normative structure provides elements for answering the question of the validity of practical norms: their authority can only be justified if we consider ourselves as legislating them not individually but as part of a community that, in some kind of unity, establishes valid norms for all members. In explaining this common normative structure, I will suggest that there is a collective dimension to the Kantian concept of self-legislation on two levels.
