Abstract

This chapter discusses how the premises of the Discourse Traditions paradigm can be relevant to studies in historical sociolinguistics by showing that adopting some theoretical and methodological tenets from that paradigm reduces difficulties in interpreting typically textual phenomena which obscure diachronic descriptions. The chapter also focuses on the application of those tenets to changes undergone by Brazilian Portuguese (BP), with special focus on the introduction of new grammaticalized forms into the pronominal system (2sg você instead of tu), for which a methodological approach that combines historical sociolinguistics and discourse traditions allows to stipulate the changing norms of usage in 19th-20th century BP based on a corpus of personal letters.
