A Robot Took My Boyfriend and My Job: Positioning Philosophy for a Resurgence
-
Robert Frodeman
Abstract
Across the 20th and now into the 21st century, philosophy and the humanities have embraced the dogmas of the modern research university - the belief in expertise, the defense of disciplinary peer review, and the billeting of professors within departments. The result has been the marginalization of philosophy. Philosophy can come to play an integral role in 21st century society, but this will require that our field embrace a new epistemic order. Creating a more vital role across society means rethinking of our habits both theoretical and institutional - our self-conception, our place within the university, and in society at large.
